Top 5 Games To Play With Someone You Love

Today may be Valentines day, but love should last all year round. So what games can you play on a date night? We take a look at the games from our collection we love to play with just the two of us. In no particular order:

Love Letter1- Love Letter

Love Letter is a game of deduction and luck. Your goal is to get your love letter into Princess Annette’s hands while deflecting the letters from competing suitors. From a deck with only sixteen cards, each player starts with only one card in hand; one card is removed from play. On a turn, you draw one card, and play one card, trying to expose others and knock them from the game. Powerful cards lead to early gains, but make you a target. Rely on weaker cards for too long, however, and your letter may be tossed in the fire! – Board Game Geek

We generally play this with other couples as it works well with 4 players. However there are times when Mike wants to play it with just me as it is one of his favorite games. We only really notice that the game can take longer with two. It can get a bit personal and boisterous, we love it when a stab it the dark pays off. Lets face it though, I always have a giggle asking Mike if he is a princess! It is surprising how many times he says yes πŸ˜›

Patchwork2- Patchwork

In Patchwork, two players compete to build the most aesthetic (and high-scoring) patchwork quilt on a personal 9×9 game board. Each player takes five buttons β€” the currency/points in the game β€” and someone is chosen as the start player. On a turn, a player either purchases one of the three patches standing clockwise of the spool or passes. To purchase a patch, you pay the cost in buttons shown on the patch. – Board Game Geek

This is one of the rare 2 player games we have in our collection. We enjoy sitting down after a long day at work to play this game. There is not too much thinking needed and it is very peaceful to play. It helps I replaced all the cardboard buttons with actual blue buttons, too cute! This game is especially good if you are a gamer and want to get your girlfriend/wife into the hobby as it is cute, simple to learn and has no confrontation when playing.

Kodama3 – Kodama

The forest is growing fast! As caretakers for Kodama, the tree spirits, you must keep the forest a healthy and lush home for your little friends. Over three growing seasons, you must cultivate trees with the right mix of flowers, insects, and branch arrangements to make your Kodama as happy as possible. Whoever cares for their Kodama best will be remembered for generations! – Board Game Geek

I backed this game on Kickstarter based on the cute pictures alone. Not the best of reasons, but hey, turned out to be an awesome decision. We have only ever played this game as a couple. We should share the love, but for some reason this has become ‘our’ game, so no one else is invited! The object is to grow your tree and score points. So there is little confrontation, we have both helped each other pick cards to score the most points before now! So this is a great game to play with your partner, but maybe not for someone really new to the hobby as it takes a while to learn all the bits and pieces.

Pandemic4 – Pandemic

In Pandemic, several virulent diseases have broken out simultaneously all over the world! The players are disease-fighting specialists whose mission is to treat disease hotspots while researching cures for each of four plagues before they get out of hand. – Board Game Geek

Pandemic is a much loved game and being a co-operative means you have to work as a team. Sure, it is a little harder to win with just the two of you, but you will appreciate the win when it happens! There is something a little romantic about saving the world. I find when we play in a group you get a ‘backseat’ player who just takes over. When we play as a couple we tend to talk through the options and decide together what we could do. There have even been times we have sacrificed our play to get the overall win, so cute! If you wanted to take it further, get Pandemic Legacy and set a night aside each month to play through the year long campaign. With a Legacy game it will change and become more challenging over the year, so a bit more excitement.

Mansions Of Madness5 – Mansions of Madness

Mansions of Madness: Second Edition is a fully cooperative, app-driven board game of horror and mystery that takes place in the same universe as Eldritch Horror and Elder Sign. Let the immersive app guide you through the veiled streets of Innsmouth and the haunted corridors of Arkham’s cursed mansions as you search for answers and respite.

A couple that goes insane together stays together right? Well it works for the Joker and Harley Quinn!! Yeah, this may be a little off beat, but it is another co-op game where you have to work together. A lot of the time you will be rescuing each other from various horrors, dueling strange monsters together and solving mysteries along the way. The app makes this game more accessible than ever as it runs the game for you. Mike and I have played this together and with various other people and we have enjoyed all the experiences. You can go for a nice short game or go for a longer scenario and take all day if wanted. For such an unromantic theme we do enjoy playing this game as a couple to see if we can win.

And, with an honorable mention –

Pass The PigsPass The Pigs

The game where you chuck two plastic pigs onto the table and score points depending on how they land. Yep, sounds that simple because it is! However this was the game my parents played in the pub allllllll the time when they first started dating. It fits in your pocket so can be played anywhere. At a restaurant waiting for your food – Pass the Pigs. On a plane flying off on a romantic holiday – Pass the Pigs. Baby just fallen asleep and you want to play a quick, quiet game together – Pass the Pigs. It has the push your luck mechanic, if they land a certain way you wont score that round or loose all your points! It is a bit random, the pigs cannot be tamed to land how you want! The great thing is you learn what the scores are and both add it all up excitedly together each time the piggies land. So it makes it fun to play if a little predictable.

(just to point out the liquid in the wine glasses was neat cherries & berries squash, something I forgot when I took a swig when clearing up – bleugh, horrible!!)
