Our 2015 Holiday – The Lake District

Last week we celebrated Tammy’s 30th Birthday in style, by going to The Lake District. We stayed in a lovely old school house that had been turned into a top-notch holiday home. With Tammy’s parents joining us, lots of games were packed 😛

Games We Played On Our Hols

On arrival we went to explore the Old Waitby Schoolhouse. What did we stumble across in the Children’s bedroom? An old toy chest. Of course we had to open it and see what was inside . . .

Toy Chest

The usual fare was included, a teddy, puzzles, dominoes and monopoly. Not sure about poker for kids! What did catch our eye was a game called Fox & Geese. A game neither of us had heard of.

Box Art for Fox & Geese

A game for 2 players, ages 8+, this version is by The Green Board Game Co and can be found on Amazon second hand for around £25. It came with a standard playing board. It has some lovely little wooden Geese and a wooden Fox. Really nicely made and fun to play with.

Whats in the box?

Surrounded!

Turns out it is a really old game, medieval in origins and has really simple rules. You play as either the fox, or the flock of geese.

If you play as the fox the game is similar to droughts, you have to jump over the geese to capture them all.

If you play as the geese you are trying to surround the fox so he cannot make any further moves and is trapped.

Destructions

Being a two player game it did not see much table time as the family were all together. The few times it was played we did have fun.

Felt like it took a while to get into the game, the fox just sorta moves around aimlessly at first. It then gets tense when the geese make the first mistake and are captured. I think the highest was 4 geese captured in one go!! It feels like the geese will win no problem at first, you start with 18 of them, but boy does the fox move around. The geese did not win one game! (whenever played we had two goes, one as the fox, then as the geese, only seemed fair!)

Playing Fox&Geese

This version is lovely with the wooden pieces, but other copies use simple tokens, one colour for the geese and a contrasting colour for the fox.

Animal Upon Animal

Mike had a spectacular moment in Animal Upon Animal when all the animals fell off the crocodile!

Sushi Go

a

Sushi Go, Heckmeck, Splendor and 10 Minute Takedown were great games to play each evening when we were a bit tired from days out. 10 Minute Takedown got a lot of giggles. Setting up a little flick only for your dice to move nowhere!

We also played a few games of Ashes Rise of the Phoenixborn, Tammy is determined to win one game with the The Cloudsea Siren Phoenixborn – Saria Guideman. No luck yet, but it is getting close.

Ticket To Ride, one of the few games we can get Tammy’s Dad to play, is quickly turning Monopoly on us – He kept stealing other peoples tracks when playing. There were some dirty looks being thrown each time he placed his trains!

Ticket To Ride

We also tried Peanut Butter Oreos – ewww, not that we like the originals all that much.

Mille Bornes

A game Tammy’s mum played with Tammy’s Granddad when she was little all those years ago – lol, was Mille Bornes. So when Mum saw a copy of the game on holiday in America one time she grabbed it. When Mum was explaining to us how to play it sounded complicated and we all gave up and thought it was a terrible game. Until Tammy found out how to play through an online version. So this was a chance to kick ass and chew bubble gum!!

Playing Mille Bornes

Once you know the rules this is a fast paced little bugger of a game. You need to put down mile cards to add up to 1000 to end the game. But you need a green traffic light to place these cards and your opponent can stop you with punctured tyres, crashes, speed limits and red traffic lights along with others! Fun times. – Yep Tammy kicked ass, but only just 🙂

Fun Times

We didn’t just stay at home and play games all day! We did venture outside a few times, there were cows and sheep and tourists and very steep hills, so we went back to the schoolhouse quick!

Our pet sitters left a cute note when we got back, brilliant likeness of our Guinea-Pigs, Buddy the spikey one and Winston the long haired one.
